My $$$ Expectations

So what are my expectation in terms of money. That’s what we all want when uploading to stock sites. A decent passive income to supplement the income from our day jobs.

For me it’s to help pay for this hobby.

My expectation for 2019. Is to get my stock income to start paying for the software I use and this blog. This is a simply goal I believe I can hit with in the first few months of 2019, if I put the effort in to getting decent images.

I want to set realistic goals so to start with, I would like to see my earnings at roughly $20 a month by July. This may seem small but like I say this first goal is to get my hobby to pay for its self then I can move on to the next.

After the first goal of $20 by July. I would like to see the time I will be putting in to stock photography increase my earnings to $50 a month by the end of 2019. Again not a big goal. But this will have been the first full year of actually taking it a little more serious.

This will also give me the time to play around and see what images of mine sell. Then I will be able to concentrate most of my attention to the type of images that are selling.

In 2020 I would like to see my earning reach over the triple figure mark. This will be a great achievement. It will also start to help improve my equipment over time. At the moment I am using a canon 80D. My goal one day is to be able to purchase a canon 1DX mrk iii, it will be out by the time I can afford one. I will be creating a whole page on this website dedicated to gear so I can update when ever I get more. Also I will be going in to why I purchased each item and what I use them for.

Then going off a brilliant post I read by Alexandre Rotenberg ‘How to Earn $500/Month with Stock Photography‘ I would definitely  give it a read if you are wanting to get in to stock photography as this is not a get rich quick scheme. You will be able to see if its something you want to get into. even though it states $500/Month. By the end of the 3rd year 2021 I would like to be reaching $300 per month. I believe this is a realistic goal to achieve by then.

If by then I do reach $300 per month this would be an amazing 3 year journey in to my stock income. We shall see the out come at the end of 2021. I hope you stick around to see what happens.

Maybe I am setting my goals to low.

But then again I need to improve my technique. Learn what makes a good image technically. I don’t want to set my goals to high because if I do not reach them this could put a downer on the experience and make me give up on it.

I have never taken a photography class in my life, this is all just a hobby that is self taught. The best way I learn is just by doing it and learn on the way. This way I can figure out and learn from mistakes. But also I will find ways that work for me and not just mimic the way other people do things. Which would of happened if I went to a class to be taught. But if you are starting out definitely learn the basics so you can shoot in manual mode. There are plenty of site on the web that will teach you this.

What were your expectations when starting out did you reach them how long did it take you?

What are your expectations if you are just starting out when do you want to reach your goals by?

  1. Thanks for the mention.
Interesting to see your projections. I would say that they’re very much on the “average contributor” side 😀
I have no idea what niche you would like focus on…from looking at your port, wildlife? Maybe you’re not sure either but good idea to think about. What is it that you enjoy shooing and do you have access to some places if others have? I enjoy poker and have access to poker rooms…that’s pretty niche!
I’m sure you’ll exceed your expectations as you seem determined, evidenced by this blog.
Best of luck and keep up the good work

    1. No worries Alex it is a helpful read and brutally honest haha.

I have no idea yet. The wildlife uploads were a bit random to be fair just from a trip to the zoo.

It would be mainly architecture when I’m out and about or landscapes. At the moment I’m playing around with objects/products with negative space and shooting them in doors under a controlled environment.

It’s all abit random at the moment. The stuff I do like to shoot like architecture, isn’t really a niche. Would really have to find a unique way to shoot this type of image to stand out.

  2. Architecture sounds good, easier to have access than wildlife.

I also like architecture but am by no means a specialist on this type of photography, although I do have some healthy regular sales from some architecture shots. Not really my niche either but if I do know that a new building is going up I’ll make the effort to try to get some shots of them before others…at least that guarantees a few sales and it’s common sense. Like these places (some sales):

Although the Starbucks opening in Milan, I was two-months late (hence few sales):

I don’t know what kind of lens you have but I try to use my super super super wide angle lens for architecture and that ensures that at least they’re unique! It’s a 10-20mm lens….buildings falling over type lens lol

Just some ideas! :)) Best to just play around and find a style that works for you.

I see the products and backgrounds…my advice is that white background really means white and not grey!

    Good luck

    1. Cheers Alex. Some nice shots.
I only have 2 lenses at the min 10 to 18 STM and a 50mm 1.8 but on a 1.6 crop sensor. Good advice there are a few new buildings going up around me. The only issue I have seen with uploading shots of buildings is rejection due to property release if it’s a well known buildings.
